Souderton Pools Closed In 2010
The two swimming pools at Souderton Community Park will be closed next year for rehabilitation, and they should re-open on Memorial Day weekend of 2011. Borough Manager Michael Coll says water filtration equipment at the recreational pool, built in 1953, is seriously deficient.
“There is no possibility of even finding repair parts for that filter system. We cannot operate again with the existing filtration equipment. The lower pool, that’s our competitive lap pool, was built in 1964. The filtration system is far better than our other pool, but we are having problems with leaks and the overall quality of filtration.”
Coll says the older pool also has no skimmer system to remove hair, grass and other debris from the water surface. He says plans are still at the conceptual stage, but they call for zero depth entry, larger shallow areas, and fountains, sprayers and slides at the recreational pool, and a deeper diving well. The competition pool should stay pretty much as it is now, but with a wheelchair ramp. The cost is uncertain, but they are trying to hold it under $3 million, and a fundraising campaign and higher membership fees will help to pay the bills.
