The Gywnedd Mercy women are champions again! The Griffins defeated Baptist Bible last night 68-49 to win their sixth conference championship. Freshman Shea Wassell (North Wales, PA. / Lansdale Catholic) scored 14 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to be named the games MVP. "Everyone had a part in this" said Griffin head coach Keith Mondillo after the game as his team climbed the ladder on the floor to cut down a piece of the championship net. For Mondillo, he will now take Gwynedd Mercy into the NCAA tournament for the seventh time in his 17 year coaching career. The Colonial States Athletic League Champion gets an automatic bid. The Griffins gave up the games first bucket, but after that, never trailed again. They took a 27-16 lead into the locker room at the half then used a 13-3 run mid-way into the second half that turned an eight difference into a double-digit lead. Sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown, PA. / Norristown) had 11 points off the bench while senior Brittany Neill (Woodlyn, PA. / Archmere Academy) had ten points to lead the Griffins who find out Monday morning who their next opponent will be.
Saturday night is a big night at the Griffin Complex. That's because the Gwynedd-Mercy women's basketball team host Baptist Bible for the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship.
