PA-voter ID law is standing tall this morning after Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson declined to grant an injunction on the law filed by opponents.

State Rep. Todd Stephens, who was a guest on Comment Please by Univest on Wednesday afternoon, says people should know how the law came about. He says Jimmy Carter and James Baker were central figures in the effort to create the measure nationally.

“In 2005 they came out with recommendations, among those recommendations was to have voters present photo ID at the poles before being able to vote. Following that Indiana implemented a law that was challenged, it went to the U.S. Supreme Court, our law by the way is modeled after Indiana’s, that law was upheld in a 6 to 3 decision.”

Stephens says, a provision of the law allows everyone to vote even if they don’t have ID. They simply have to provide it at a later date, through various channels, including e-mail, snail mail or walking it into the voter bureau.
