Upper Gwynedd may require homes to be inspected for illegal sump pump hookups when they are sold.

The township solicitor is drafting an ordinance that the township commissioners could act on in about the next two months.

Township Manager Len Perrone says the peak flow at the wastewater treatment plant comes an hour or more after a storm, and it’s normally caused by one thing.

“That is typically caused by sump pump flow from people’s basements.  Stormwater is getting into the ground down to the sump pump level and then being pumped into our sanitary sewer system.”

He says the excess water costs ratepayers money and raises environmental issues.
