“Don’t Drown” Bill Approved
The Pennsylvania House has passed a “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” Bill sponsored by Montgomery County State Representative Todd Stephens. It provides a fine and license suspension for people who drive around temporary barricades on flooded roads. He says people who do that don’t understand the danger.
“They don’t realize that just six inches of water can flood and float your car. There are people that died because they get swept away in these rushing floodwaters. They have no idea how dangerous it is, and then what happens is they put our first responders in harm’s way. There was an incident last August in Upper Moreland where a guy drove around a barricade, swam out of his car and then swam back to his car and had to be rescued. Some guys from Enterprise Fire Company went out to rescue him. They got stranded and the National Guard had to come in to save the guys who were there to save the other guy.”
Stephens says the idea of the bill is to raise awareness and save lives.
