Environmentalists: No Fracking
Environmentalists have given the Delaware River Basin Commission written comments from more than 30,000 people who oppose drilling for natural gas near the river. Drilling is already going on in the huge Marcellus Shale deposit, which stretches across much of northern and central Pennsylvania. In order to break the shale and release the gas, the drilling companies use a process called hydrofracturing or fracking, where they pump water and chemicals deep into the ground under high pressure. Opponents say fracking near the Delaware River watershed could harm the drinking water quality for more than 15 million people, including North Penn and North Wales Water Authority Customers.
