Schwartz Says Oil Spill Shows Need For Alternative Fuels
“Really create the incentives to make sure that we have renewable and alternative fuels and more energy efficiency. All of our appliances, our buildings, our automobiles, ought to be more energy efficient so we’re using less fuel. That would be a good thing. We have some of those technologies to do it, and we ought to encourage that through tax provisions.”
Schwartz says the worst accidental oil spill in history has been harmful not only to the environment, but also oil industry workers and the economies of the Gulf States. She says we will continue using oil for a very long time, but a two or three percent reduction will help, and we can pay for alternative fuels by moving part of the oil industry subsidies to their producers.
