Octogenarian Gets House Arrest For Social Security Fraud
Federal prosecutors say 82-year-old Evelyn Baptiste of Royersford collected disability benefits under one Social Security number and retirement benefits under another for about 20 years.
She was overpaid by $186,000, and she must pay restitution, but her lawyer says she can only afford about $50 a month and her health is failing, so it’s unlikely that the government will recover much.
She’s one of several Southeastern Pennsylvania residents charged with Social Security fraud earlier this year as part of a national crackdown.
