Female Fugitive From U Gwynedd Arrested In New York
An Upper Gwynedd woman, accused of stealing a home and retirement savings from a Hatfield man who was a stroke victim, was arrested Tuesday at JFK Airport in New York following a global search by Montgomery County Detectives, the FBI and foreign authorities.
54-year-old Janet Gitney had been hiding out in the Philippines. Federal authorities took her into custody and charged her with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. The local charges include theft, forgery and fraud. Court documents say she stole the home by transferring ownership to her name without the victim’s knowledge or consent, using her power of attorney over his affairs. A Montgomery County judge has signed an order allowing authorities to seize both her home, on Brian Way in Upper Gwynedd, and the Hatfield home, and sell them and turn the proceeds over to the stroke victim, 57-year-old Eugene Waldspurger, who has been living in a Bucks County nursing home.
