Ex Coach Charged In Sex For Gifts Case Waives Hearing

fmurphyArchbishop Carroll High School’s former Athletic Director, accused of seeking sexual favors from a former male student in return for gifts, has waived his right to a preliminary hearing. That means his case moves closer to trial in Montgomery County Court.  39-year-old Francis Murphy (pictured here) of Bryn Mawr was also on the baseball and football coaching staffs.  He is charged with corruption of a minor, promoting prostitution and related offenses.  He was arrested about a month ago outside the Frosty Falls Ice Cream Shop in Bridgeport, where he went to meet the boy.  Instead he met Montgomery County Detectives who had assumed the boy’s identity.  He told his mother what was going on, and she called police.  Court documents say Murphy recruited the boy to play football as a ninth grader, but he left the school for financial reasons this school year as an eleventh grader.  When the boy contacted Murphy via Facebook for help in getting his football cleats out of the locker room, the talk quickly turned to sex, and Murphy allegedly offered the boy sneakers and other sports gear in return for an ongoing relationship.  Archbishop Carroll is in Radnor, in Delaware County, but just over the Montgomery County line.
