Tax Prep Volunteers Needed
The North Penn United Way is looking for volunteers to help low and middle-income people prepare their income tax returns.
Director of Community Engagement and Volunteerism Christa Detweiler says the Internal Revenue Service provides a training program for tax preparers.“It’s a self-paced program that is done online, and then you have to take a test and pass it in order to become certified, and in addition to that training we offer optional training classes with one of our more experienced volunteers that has a background in accounting, and he helps our volunteers by going through practice problems and doing practice returns to help people apply the knowledge that they’re learning.”
Detweiler says they also need greeters, interpreters and site coordinators. She says they will use the ten sites they used last year, and they have added the North Penn and Indian Valley Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs this year. Volunteers are asked to commit to one four-hour session per week through the tax season, starting in January and ending April 15.
