SEPTA’s Regional Rail lines are no longer numbered.
The transit authority dropped the numbers Sunday after a study found that they were confusing riders who only use the trains occasionally. For example, the R-5 line goes to Lansdale and Doylestown and other Bucks and Montgomery County locations, but it also goes to Paoli and other points along the Main Line. The R-2 line goes to Warminster, but on the other end it goes to Wilmington and Newark, Delaware. Now just the name of the destination is on the timetables and schedule boards at the Market East, 30th Street and Suburban Stations, but changing the thousands of signs on the trains and at the many stations around the suburbs will take a while. The color coding is going away too, and all lines will use a blue-gray.
