“You avoid the risks involved in driving caused by other road users. Expect the unexpected. Scan the roadway as you drive along, adapt to your surroundings and conditions and know your vehicle and its capabilities and limitations.”
Senior Driving Instructor Mike Mercadante of Driver Training Services in North Wales said he agrees, and he also has a rule about thinking defensively.
“Always assume everyone around you is a worse driver than you are. That puts you into the state of defensive driving as a mindset as you drive. You’re going to expect everyone around you to make mistakes, and you’re going to anticipate those mistakes and have a contingency plan ready to deal with those mistakes. If they don’t happen great, but if they do happen and you’re not prepared, that’s when bad things happen.”
He said he tells students they should always strive to be better drivers today than they were yesterday because they’re never a complete master of driving and they’re always learning something new.
