Canal Day in Mont Clare
The annual celebration of the Schuylkill Canal and its heritage on Sunday featured a full day of music as well as homegrown crafts and a fishing derby for the kids. The Schuylkill Canal Association started the event almost three decades ago as it worked to save the 184-year-old waterway and the historic structures nearby. Before the Civil War, there were 23 canals along the 100-mile stretch of the Scuylkill River. Barges used them to carry coal and farm crops into Philadelphia before the railroad became widespread. The Schuylkill Canal at Mont Clare and another one in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia are the only surviving parts of what was once a busy and complex network of waterways. Montgomery County officially assumed ownership of the canal from the state earlier this month.
