Lansdale officials have decided not to proceed with a proposal that would have established standards for contractors bidding on borough construction projects with budgets in excess of $100,000. One of those standards required contractors to have an apprenticeship program. Critics of the proposal said it would eliminate nonunion contractors from the bidding process because most of them give their workers on the job training while union shops tend to favor more formalized programs. Borough Council Vice President Rich DiGregorio says he made the proposal because young workers need an opportunity to learn a trade. Seven members of council voted against it while DiGregorio and Council President Jack Hansen supported it. Both of them are members of labor unions.
