A Conshohocken man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill in a high profile murder case. Joseph Giongo is charged with beating his wife to death in front of their seven-year-old son after an argument over a fast food order more than two years ago. The judge is taking the plea under advisement and will issue a ruling after a separate hearing that will focus on testimony presented by the psychiatrists that have evaluated Giongo. If the plea is accepted, Giongo would be confined at Norristown State Hospital until his doctors convince the judge that he is cured. Otherwise, he faces trial on third degree murder charges that could put him behind bars for more than 20 years if he is convicted.
